Funded by a grant from the U. S. Department of State, a new science comic book by Project Tiktaalik titled ‘Jongole Gondogol’ has been published.
This comic is based on some selected topics from the secondary level science curriculum of Bangladesh. Many important topics are omitted from the school’s curriculum due to many reasons such as social taboo and the contradiction with religious views of teachers. Among other topics in this Null curriculum, one of the topics is ‘Evolution’.

Poster

For the first time in Bangladesh, the basic idea of the evolution theory is introduced through a fictional comic book. The content includes humorous examples and real life events to clarify the complex science concepts.

Adding to that, this comic also challenges gender stereotypes by having a female protagonist character and therefore presenting a female role model to the students. This will also encourage particularly female students in science learning activities.

The goal is to distribute a total of 5000 copies of this colored 32 page comicbook to five city divisions around Bangladesh completely free of cost. For the time being, the selected districts are Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet, Rajshahi and Khulna. Several workshops will be conducted in the upcoming months. Since it is impossible to reach all students at once, an online edition of the book will soon be available. The e-book can be downloaded from the Project Tiktaalik website at www.projecttiktaalik.com.
